Senior Dogs

There is usually a moment you notice it. He takes the stairs one at a time now. He waits by the boot instead of jumping straight in. He circles the same spot for longer before he settles, and he settles a little more carefully than he used to.

Amble exists for that stretch of a dog's life. Everything on this page was chosen for one ordinary problem that comes with age, and nothing else.

Orthopaedic and supportive beds, so a nap is not taken on a cold hard floor, which is where arthritis and stiff hips are felt most. Non-slip folding car steps, so the boot stops being a jump. Slow feeder bowls that are kinder on worn teeth and a stomach that got sensitive. Padded no-pull harnesses that take the load off an old neck and shoulders. Cooling mats for the summers he now feels, and warm padded coats and vests for the winter mornings he feels too.

New Zealand and Australian homes are hard on old joints. Timber, tile and polished concrete hold the cold right through winter, and a thin mat laid over them is not a bed. Then the season turns and a thick-coated thirteen-year-old struggles with heat in a way he never did at five. Most of what an ageing dog needs is not medical. It is a floor that is not freezing, a step instead of a leap, and a bowl he can eat from without rushing.

We are not vets and we do not sell cures. Stiffness, a greying muzzle and a slower pace are not problems to be fixed. They just ask for different gear, chosen properly.
